PEFC International

PEFC International, a leading advocate for global forest preservation, champions sustainable forest management and responsible timber sourcing across supply chains. As the world's foremost forest certification system, PEFC is dedicated to safeguarding our planet's woodlands.

I contributed to PEFC's impactful marketing endeavors, notably the 'Forests Are Home' campaign. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of using certified and responsibly sourced timber in furniture production. My role encompassed crafting compelling copy and content across various platforms, including social media, website articles, video scripts, and email communications. By emphasising the vital link between household furnishings and their origins in forests, our campaign resonated with both consumers and industry stakeholders, advocating for forest protection.

Additionally, I collaborated on PEFC's 'Supporting Sustainable Rubber' campaign, which sought to promote the utilisation of rubber sourced from sustainable agroforests. Through strategic messaging and targeted outreach, we worked to advance the cause of environmental responsibility in rubber production.

Autumn is not just a beautiful time for forest walks; it's also a vital season for forests. Trees, plants, and wildlife prepare for the chilly winter ahead, and as we cozy up on our wooden furniture at home, it's the perfect moment to make a difference.

Choosing PEFC-certified furniture is one of the most meaningful ways to respect our forests during Autumn, as the wood is responsibly sourced from sustainably-managed forests, ensuring the long-term protection of the forests the wood comes from.

And why wouldn’t you want to protect forests? After all, Forests Are Home.

Did you know that the wooden furniture in your workplace is making you and your colleagues happier?

According to a recent survey conducted by Canberra University, about 82% of workers who were exposed to eight or more wooden surfaces in their office were either ‘satisfied or very satisfied’ with their work, compared with only 53% of workers with no wooden surfaces in their workplace.

And when you choose PEFC-certified wooden furniture for your office or workplace, you’re keeping our forests happy too!

Do you know where the wood in your furniture comes from?

PEFC certification offers robust safeguards against the use of timber from illegal and controversial sources. These safeguards are implemented not only through stringent sustainable forest management requirements but also through independently verified chain of custody certification and a thorough Due Diligence System.

Korean manufacturer 탄소창고 Dongnam Realize is proving that wood is much more than a sustainable choice for the furniture in our homes - wood can also be a viable replacement for traditional sources of plastics, such as petroleum. Using cellulose derived from trees, Dongnam Realize developed CXP, a polymer composed mostly of wood (70%), that can be used in the same way as conventional plastic - without the intensive sourcing of fossil fuels and the huge costs to the environment that go with it.

Dongnam Realize produces safe eco-products from children’s toys to homeware with KFCC/PEFC-certified wood, which is sourced from sustainably managed forests. We are proud to partner with companies like Dongnam Realize - who are providing a viable solution to our overwhelming dependence on plastics whilst also helping to protect forests. And why wouldn’t you want to protect forests? After all, Forests are Home.

Wood has been a part of our kitchens for thousands of years and we use it to store, prepare, preserve, cook, and eat food. Wood is going through something of a revival in contemporary kitchen design, as homeowners look to add a touch of warmth and intimacy to their homes. And when you choose certified sustainable wood for your kitchen, you’re choosing more than just a beautiful piece of furniture that’s built to last.

You’re inviting the forests into your home, establishing a connection to the outside world and giving new meaning to our living spaces. You’re also choosing to support smallholder foresters to supply wood sustainably, protecting our forests from over-exploitation and deforestation. And why wouldn’t you want to protect forests? After all, forests are home.

Did you know that wooden products are scientifically proven to help us relax? Studies show that touching wood leads to a significant decrease in blood pressure and anxiety levels when compared with other materials.
Wooden furniture is a comforting presence in our homes during the busy festive season, and when you choose to buy PEFC-certified furniture, you are doing a lot more than cosying up your living spaces.

You’re choosing legally harvested wood that preserves forests. You’re uplifting the livelihoods of rural foresters and protecting threatened and vulnerable animal and plant species. And why wouldn’t you want to protect forests? After all, forests are home.

Do you share our passion for protecting forests through sustainable furniture choices? By joining our ‘Forests are Home’ campaign, we can lift rural foresters out of poverty, fight climate change, and protect forests together.

Wood has inspired the imaginations of many generations of children; we learn how to play with wood, how to build and solve problems and how to interact with the world. Most of us are exposed to wood at a very young age, and it is one of the safest materials nature provides for babies and children. However, when you choose PEFC-certified, sustainably sourced wooden children's toys from companies like Geuther, you’re doing much more than providing your children with safe toys to explore, interact and learn with.

Geuther Vietnam is the world market leader in wooden baby products, such as children’s furniture and toys, and has been entertaining our children for over 140 years. Recognising the vast benefits of forests and the value in protecting them, Geuther gained PEFC chain of custody certification in 2017, and today all of their products are made from wood that has been sourced from sustainably managed forests.

We spoke with Ms. Diem Vo, HR and Compliance Manager at Geuther Vietnam to learn more about the production of their wooden products, why they decided to gain PEFC chain of custody certification and how it has benefited their business.

When we’re small, our bedrooms aren’t just places to rest and to feel safe. They are the stage for our imaginations - the settings for our first adventures. The deck of an old tugboat, cruising down a jungle river. The cockpit of an aeroplane, skimming low over trees.
Parents of young children know this well. That’s why they choose the furniture that will make up that vast and tiny world with such care. But when that wooden furniture is PEFC certified, it can make both bedtime and playtime more meaningful.

The PEFC label means that the furniture we live and play on comes from wood that was harvested sustainably, keeping forests standing, and protecting the vital species that live there. It means that every step along the way has been transparently audited, and that every actor in the supply chain has safe working conditions and fair wages. So you can sleep soundly knowing that you are securing your child’s future by protecting the future of their forests. That’s how you protect your home, and theirs.

Summer is in full swing in the northern hemisphere, and that means we're out in our gardens and balconies. But when we step outdoors, we don’t leave our furniture behind. Garden and other outdoor furniture represent a significant portion of the overall industry.

In fact, according to Fortune Business Insight, the global outdoor furniture market is projected to grow from USD 46.21 billion in 2021 to USD 66.55 billion by 2028. Much of this furniture will be made of wood, which is both cost-effective and well-suited to the elements outside. And with the industry growing this quickly, it is vital to our forests that the wood used for our garden furniture is sourced sustainably.

When your outdoor lounge sets, picnic tables, or garden decks carry the PEFC label, you are choosing to support the sustainable management of our forests.

Certification both protects forests and lifts rural foresters out of poverty. There’s no better way to celebrate summer.

Did you know that the demand for sustainable furniture is expected to increase fivefold over the decade?

Just a few years ago, the global market for sustainable, responsibly sourced furniture was estimated to be valued at around $14 billion (US). Demand has grown significantly over the past few years as homeowners and furniture buyers become increasingly aware of the impacts of the furniture industry on the world’s climate and forests. By 2030 the market for responsibly sourced furniture will be worth close to $90 billion; can you, as a furniture designer, manufacturer, retailer, trader or stakeholder rise to meet this demand?

Yes, you can! If you are interested in gaining access to new markets for your products, meeting the international standards for furniture trade and proving your commitment to sourcing furniture responsibly to your customers and partners in the supply chain, join us on 8-9 March for our latest Chain of Custody Webinar to learn everything that you need to know about PEFC chain of custody certification.

In our homes, we are increasingly making responsible choices when furnishing our living spaces. Driven by a heightened awareness of environmental issues and shifting trends in design, the global market for certified sustainable furniture is expected to grow 11% over the next several years, and this growth is expected to be much more substantial for wooden furniture.

With over 285 million hectares of certified forest area and more than 20,000 companies holding chain of custody certification, PEFC is the largest forest certification system in the world. Furniture designers, manufacturers, and retailers who hold PEFC certification have access to the largest supply of responsibly sourced and certified wood globally and a verified, trusted system of traceability to display to furniture buyers and homeowners. And in the end, all of this means protecting forests here at home and across the world.

And why wouldn’t you want to protect forests? After all, Forests Are Home.

Latex inner tubes have also helped to break mountain biking time trial records, and latex is the ‘material of choice’ for professional cyclists in competitions and events. Latex expands to 7 or 8 times its original size, which means that the tyre is in contact with the ground more often, with less bounce than Butyl inner tyres.

Using sustainable rubber in these inner tubes not only means a faster and smoother ride, but it also benefits the people who harvest the rubber and the surrounding forests too!

PEFC International

Supplier countries for one natural product are consumer countries for another. PEFC has decades of experience advancing sustainable forest management certification across the world, taking big strides in the United States, Canada and Europe.

But where natural rubber is concerned, the market begins in Southeast Asia. Protecting these hardwood tree crops is connected to, and every bit as important, as protecting forests.

We all have a role to play to achieve a sustainable supply chain. Reach out to us, or our partners in Southeast Asia, to learn more.

From arts and crafts at school, to the office and even the makeup in Hollywood movies, we see and use rubber in adhesives in so many different ways. And who would've thought that rubber adhesives can protect forests and empower smallholders too?

Well it can, and PEFC is here to make sure that it’s produced sustainably. PEFC certification helps smallholders to expand market access, achieve higher yields, and improve their livelihoods whilst preserving adjacent forests. Wherever rubber is, PEFC is there too.

PEFC International

Rising awareness of the importance of PPE equipment globally in the wake of the pandemic has resulted in a boom in the manufacturing of rubber gloves. Natural latex is still the dominant material used to make rubber gloves, however synthetic materials such as nitrile, which is made in a similar way to plastic, are not far behind. As rubber gloves aren’t recyclable, most of them are simply tossed away. That means there are currently hundreds of billions of rubber gloves currently in landfills, which can often take many years to decompose. Nitrile gloves, which are made from non-biodegradable fossil fuels, also have the potential to contaminate airways and water sources when disposed of.

How much longer do synthetic (nitrile) rubber gloves take to decompose than natural rubber (latex gloves)?

A: 2x as long
B: 5x as long
C: 10x as long
D: 20x as long

See if you can guess correctly and we will post the answer soon!

PEFC International

Urban growth around the world continues to expand, which means plenty of building is taking place and construction equipment can be heard in and around most major cities and towns.

If not for natural rubber, in the form of anti-vibration mounts, those bulldozers would be producing a lot more noise pollution. Most of that rubber comes from Southeast Asia. When it is PEFC certified, that rubber can also lift smallholders out of poverty and mitigate climate change.

PEFC International

As crude oil is a finite resource, making synthetic rubber is an unsustainable process, and we will eventually need to find an alternative. Latex rubber, derived naturally from the rubber tree, can replace synthetic rubber in many applications and rubber plantations may also help to store carbon rather than release it into the atmosphere.

Natural rubber plantations have the potential to store significant amounts of carbon, in the wood of the rubber tree and in the soil, provide two essential products in rubber and timber, and can also help to protect forests and uplift the livelihoods of rubber smallholders. But this can only be done when the plantations are sustainably managed, which is why PEFC is here in the major rubber growing regions of the world to make a sustainable future for rubber a reality.

PEFC International

At PEFC, our approach begins with engaging rubber smallholders at the ground level, and the positive impacts are felt throughout the entire rubber supply chain. When a shipment of PEFC-certified sustainable rubber or rubberwood arrives in Germany, it’s tracked from the plantation, likely in Southeast Asia, all the way through until it’s finally processed.

To obtain PEFC certification, rubber farmers must manage their plantations sustainably, preserving surrounding forests and balancing harvesting rates to allow forests a chance to regenerate.

Choosing PEFC-certified rubber is better for you, fairer to farmers, and much better for the environment. If we mean to kick our fossil fuel habit, a part of that includes leaving behind synthetic rubber!

PEFC International

When you think about it, the rubber tree really is quite amazing. It supplies the latex that helps hearts, keeps us safe when we drive or fly, and protects frontline workers during a pandemic. But latex isn’t the only gift of the rubber tree. Rubberwood is commonly used in parquet flooring in homes, businesses, on dance floors in clubs, and in sporting stadiums around the world.

How many other trees or plants supply the latex that goes into essential protective equipment such as rubber gloves, AND the wood in the floor that the doctor or nurse is examining patients?

When that rubber tree is grown on PEFC-certified plantations, it’s sustainable, renewable, and secures the livelihoods of small-scale rubber farmers. So the next time you break it down on the dancefloor, think about supporting PEFC sustainable rubber and millions of small-scale rubber farmers throughout Southeast Asia.

Silk-carrying trains once hurtled from the docks of Vancouver to the Grand Central Terminus in New York. Through snowy mountains and across the prairies, 'silkers' held precedence over the railways—even the famed royal trains had to wait for them to pass by. Our ‘Silk Line’ cocktail embodies the essence of this journey, with a sweet Canadian gentleness that belies the ferocious speeds of those trains. Whilst silk trains waited for no-one, this citrus-forward vodka tipple is waiting for you, at the Hudson Rooms.
